Q&A with Dr. Antonio J. Webb

1) Why did you choose to go into medicine?

I became interested in medicine after attending a High School magnet program in Louisiana geared towards exposing high school students to medicine. I immediately fell in love and credit that program for me becoming a doctor today.

2) What do you feel was your biggest obstacle throughout the application process, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest obstacle was my exam scores. Traditionally I have not been a good standardized test taker. This led me to take the MCAT three times which I struggled with each exam. Each time preparing for the MCAT, I decided to take a different approach. I went from trying to studying alone to taking a preparatory course to hiring a tutor. What I have come to realize is that sometimes in life, this is exactly what you have to do: adapt and overcome. If something is not working, take a different approach. Eventually, you will become successful.

3) What was the most rewarding part of medical school?

Medical school was the best 4 years of my life! I had a blast. I made lifelong friends, acquired mentors,  and essentially learned how to become a good doctor. The most rewarding part, however, was living out my dream to become a physician.

4) Why did you choose your specialty?

I choose Orthopedic Surgery for a number of reasons. For one, I loved working with my hands. Every since I was little, I was always known for taking things apart and putting them back together. This is essentially what Orthopedics is about. In addition, I loved the fact that I could receive immediate gratification after fixing a fractures in a little kid from a fall or replacing a hip that’s worn in an elderly patient.

5.) What advice would you give to students wanting to follow in your footsteps?

I would have to say that medicine is a marathon, not a race. There will be times when you feel like quitting or giving up but DONT! You will be faced with failures and moments of defeat along the way. It gets better. Take each day with stride and enjoy the ride.
